Until now, in air bending accurate bending edge angles could only be determined by performing sample bendings. As experience has shown, even the "same" materials can have different properties.

Tolerances in sheet metal thicknesses , the direction of rolling, tensile strength and hardness all determine the spring-back, which must be compensated for by overbending. However, requirements are constantly increasing. What is now expected are: precise bending angles and flexible reactions with regard to both small and large piece numbers as well as rapidly changing materials.

The key to efficient bending lies in a bending angle sensor, which besides measuring automatically, adjusts the angle to the required rated value. The ACB angle sensor developed by TRUMPF can do both: measuring and adjusting in the process.
Every angle is automatically correct . Complicated and time consuming bending programme run-in phases are now a thing of the past. The system automatically and independently controls the change in the spring-back angle of different materials and material properties.

ACB – The functional principle
  • Two sensor disks with different diameters are integrated in the top tool.
  • During bending, the sensor disks with 4 points of contact centre on the inner joints of the bending.
  • The system calculates the actual angle from the interval of the disk centre points.
  • By means of intelligent sensor signal processing, the system recognizes the stress relief point and calculates the spring-back angle.
  • The sensor electronics communicate with the control which automatically re-adjusts until the programmed angle has been achieved.
  • During the entire process, the workpiece remains fixed in the machine.

Piece cost reduction
  • In order to be able to meet the demands for even shorter throughput times and consequently also more stringent adherence to delivery deadlines, batch sizes are being increasingly reduced; even to the extent of individual batches and individual parts.
  • This means that the focus is now on minimizing tool fitting times. As a result, only a company that critically scrutinizes – amongst other things - production organization, workpiece flow, downtimes and additional times can operate successfully and viably.
  • With the TRUMPF ACB angle sensor, precise angle bendings are possible at any time. It measures and adjusts the process.
